Freelander 8 Showcases New Era of High-Tech Vehicle Manufacturing in China

Shanghai is becoming an important centre for advanced vehicle manufacturing, with the new Freelander 8 offering a glimpse into the technology and production systems behind the upcoming model.

A group of Middle Eastern journalists recently visited China at the invitation of the Freelander team ahead of the vehicle’s planned Middle East launch later this year. The visit included a tour of the Freelander Super Factory, a major manufacturing facility combining British automotive heritage with Chery’s advanced production capabilities.

The factory represents Jaguar Land Rover’s first full vehicle production facility outside the UK and has received more than $3.1 billion in investment. Significant upgrades have been made to support intelligent manufacturing for new energy vehicles.

Inside the facility, more than 1,100 intelligent robots operate alongside engineers and technicians across the production process. Robotic systems handle tasks including welding, lifting body panels, installing components and moving vehicles between different stages of assembly.

Large robotic arms work with precision while automated conveyor systems move unfinished vehicles through the plant. Human workers remain central to production, carrying out specialist tasks and monitoring processes alongside the automated equipment.

Digital systems are used to track production and quality throughout the manufacturing process. Engineers monitor measurements to very small tolerances, while vehicles undergo extensive checks before leaving the facility.

Testing includes rain simulations, battery sealing assessments, advanced driver assistance system calibration and electronic inspections. The aim is to ensure that vehicles meet the requirements of markets where they will eventually be sold, including the UAE and other countries in the Middle East.

The factory also places emphasis on environmental performance. Its operations include intelligent energy management, water recycling and low-carbon production technologies as manufacturers face growing pressure to reduce the environmental impact of vehicle production.

The factory visit provided journalists with a view of vehicles being built on active production lines rather than a staged showroom presentation. Unfinished vehicles moved through different stages of assembly as automated machinery and workers carried out thousands of individual operations.

The Freelander team is preparing the Freelander 8 for its Middle East introduction later this year. The model is being developed as part of the brand’s wider expansion and will enter a market where premium SUVs remain highly popular.

The production facility highlights the increasing role of automation, digital monitoring and advanced manufacturing in the automotive industry. Rather than removing people from the production process entirely, the factory combines automated systems with skilled workers responsible for specialist assembly, inspection and quality control.

For visitors, the experience also provided a different perspective on the vehicle itself. After seeing the extensive engineering, testing and production systems behind it, the Freelander 8 emerged as the result of a large manufacturing operation involving thousands of workers, sophisticated machinery and extensive quality checks before reaching customers.
