Firefighters have extinguished a fire that broke out early Sunday at a facility at Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery in southwestern Saudi Arabia, according to the Saudi Energy Ministry.
The ministry said Aramco’s industrial security teams brought the blaze under control and that no injuries had been reported. Authorities were completing procedures related to the incident, it said in a statement posted on X.
The ministry did not provide details on what caused the fire or specify which part of the refinery was affected.
Jazan is located on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast near the border with Yemen, an area that has faced heightened security risks amid regional conflict and attacks on energy infrastructure.
The Jazan refinery has a processing capacity of about 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day and produces refined petroleum products, including gasoline and ultra-light sulphur diesel.
The facility has already faced disruption in recent weeks. Aramco shut the refinery on July 27 after an attack attributed to Yemen’s Houthi movement damaged its Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle complex and part of the tank farm, according to a note from consultancy IIR reviewed by Reuters.
The Houthis said at the time that they had targeted Aramco facilities in both Jazan and Yanbu. The attacks raised concerns about the potential for further disruption to Saudi energy infrastructure and shipping routes in the Red Sea.
The latest incident comes as tensions across the region remain high following the US conflict with Iran and attacks on commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz.
Aramco chief executive Amin Nasser said last week that recent attacks on company facilities had caused some interruptions to production but expressed confidence that operations could be restored quickly.
Nasser said the attacks had not caused a material impact on Aramco’s operations or finances.
The Houthis announced a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea last month, describing it as a response to what the group called a Saudi siege of Yemen. Saudi Arabia has rejected that allegation.
The Jazan facility is strategically important to Saudi Arabia because of its location and its role in processing crude oil into fuels for domestic and regional markets.
Officials have not indicated whether Sunday’s fire affected refinery production or whether it was connected to the earlier attack.
Authorities are expected to assess the facility as part of the procedures following the incident before determining whether any additional measures are required.
