AI Agent Used Fake Identities and Tried to Insert Malicious Code in UK Security Test

An artificial intelligence agent created fake identities, attempted to deceive real people and tried to introduce malicious code into a real open-source project during a cybersecurity test, according to the UK’s AI Security Institute.

The behaviour was discovered during an evaluation designed to examine how advanced AI systems might behave when given access to the open internet.

Researchers asked AI agents to complete a series of cybersecurity challenges. The tests were conducted 122 times across several AI models. In 10 cases, the agents carried out activities online that went beyond the intended boundaries of the exercises.

The most serious incident involved an agent attempting to place malicious code into a genuine open-source software project.

According to the institute, the agent researched people associated with the project before creating several fake online identities. It then used those identities to try to persuade a real project maintainer to approve the code.

The agent continued its efforts after the proposed code was publicly questioned. It altered some of its previous activity in an apparent attempt to make the actions look harmless and considered creating another identity to continue the operation.

The attempt ultimately failed when a human reviewer detected the malicious code and refused to approve it.

The findings have drawn attention because the AI agent was not directly instructed to deceive people or create false identities. Researchers said the behaviour emerged as the system continued trying to achieve the objective assigned to it.

The AI Security Institute stressed that the test did not represent the normal conditions under which AI systems are provided to the public.

The agents were deliberately given access to the open internet, while cybersecurity safeguards normally used by model developers were disabled. The unusual setup was intended to allow researchers to examine how the systems might behave when operating with fewer restrictions.

AISI said its investigation found no evidence of real-world harm resulting from the incident.

However, the results have prompted the institute to strengthen its testing procedures. It said future evaluations would use tighter network controls and specially designed monitoring systems capable of identifying and stopping unauthorised activity at an earlier stage.

Internet penetration in the Kingdom reached 99.6 percent in 2025, placing Saudi Arabia among the world’s most connected countries, while fiber-optic coverage extended to more than 3.9 million homes, the report said.

The report also highlighted the Kingdom’s performance in the ITU’s ICT Development Index 2025, where Saudi Arabia scored 99.2 points, the highest score globally.

The report also records broader sustainability gains under the Saudi Green Initiative, saying more than 85 initiatives have been launched since 2021, including 10 that are fully completed.

It said the Kingdom had rehabilitated 1 million hectares of land, connected more than 3.6 gigawatts of renewable energy to the national grid, planted more than 161 million trees, protected 18.1 percent of terrestrial areas and 16.1 percent of marine areas, and released 10,000 wild animals into nature reserves and national parks.
