Samsung Reportedly Plans New Wide-Foldable Phone for 2027

Samsung is reportedly preparing to expand its foldable smartphone lineup next year with another wide-format device, following the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in 2026.

South Korean publication ETNews reported that Samsung Electronics has begun development work on two wide foldable smartphones planned for 2027. The reported lineup could include a tri-fold smartphone and a separate “Wide Fold” model, with suppliers already receiving information about the projects.

A wide-fold device is designed to have greater width than height when fully unfolded, offering a broader screen compared with traditional book-style foldables.

Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in early August 2026. The device features a wider cover display and a 4:3 book-style foldable screen aimed at improving viewing, reading and gaming experiences.

At 201 grams, Samsung describes the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as its lightest Galaxy Z Fold model. The company has also reduced the thickness of its display structure while maintaining durability, as part of its continuing effort to make foldable phones slimmer and easier to carry.

Hubert Lee, executive vice president and head of the Design Team for Samsung Electronics’ Mobile eXperience business, said the Galaxy Z Fold 8 was developed around what the company calls an “emotive slim” design concept.

The approach focuses not only on making the device thinner but also on improving how it feels when opened and held. Samsung used a more curved outer design to make the handset easier to open and handle.

Lee said the latest Fold model reflects seven generations of Samsung’s foldable technology development. The company has gradually expanded its Galaxy Z series as it seeks to address different consumer preferences for large-screen mobile devices.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8’s design was also inspired by a passport, according to Lee, because of its portability, one-handed handling and ability to provide information at a glance.

Samsung’s reported plans suggest the company could take its foldable strategy in several directions rather than relying solely on the traditional book-style design.

The possibility of a tri-fold device could give users an even larger display while keeping the handset compact when folded. A separate wide-fold model could offer a different screen shape aimed at customers who prefer broader displays for productivity, entertainment and multitasking.

Samsung has not officially confirmed the reported 2027 devices, including whether a Galaxy Z Fold 9 will be released next year.

The company’s reported development plans come as smartphone makers increasingly experiment with new folding formats. Samsung remains one of the leading companies in the foldable phone market, and further expansion of its lineup could increase competition as manufacturers look for new ways to differentiate premium smartphones.
