Google Launches Gemini App for macOS to Expand AI Assistant Access

Google has introduced a dedicated version of its Gemini smart assistant for Apple computers, marking a move to broaden its reach among macOS users and strengthen competition in the AI assistant space.

The new application, designed for devices running macOS 15 or later, allows users to interact with Gemini more directly while working on their computers. One of its main features is the ability to share full screen content with the assistant, enabling it to analyse images, documents, code, and other data displayed on the device.

Unlike earlier tools that were limited to visible elements, the app can also process entire web pages. This allows users to ask detailed questions about online content without manually copying or summarising information.

Google said the app is aimed at simplifying everyday tasks by making AI assistance more accessible during routine workflows. Users can generate images, videos, and audio clips directly within the application, powered by advanced models developed by the company. Image generation is supported through Nano Banana models, while video creation uses the Veo model.

The application also integrates with cloud services, allowing users to upload files from Google Drive and revisit previous conversations linked to their account. This continuity is intended to help users manage ongoing tasks and retrieve past information more easily.

To enable these capabilities, users must grant the app permission to access system data. Google said this is necessary for Gemini to analyse on-screen content and provide real-time responses to queries. The company added that the feature is designed with user control in mind, requiring explicit approval before screen-sharing functions are activated.

The Gemini app for macOS is available free of charge in all regions and languages currently supported by the assistant. Google said it plans to expand the app’s functionality in the coming months, although specific updates have not yet been detailed.
