Apple appears to have regained its momentum, with the iPhone 17 lineup delivering one of the strongest launches in recent years. Released globally on September 19, the new models have recorded sales roughly 14% higher than last year’s iPhone 16 series across key markets such as the United States and China.
According to Counterpoint Research, Apple’s latest devices are flying off shelves, with China showing especially strong demand — nearly double the launch-week sales compared to the iPhone 16. The base iPhone 17 model has proven particularly popular, accounting for 22% of total series sales compared with 19% for its predecessor. Analysts say buyers are drawn to its balanced performance, upgraded display, improved camera, and unchanged price tag.
Premium models — the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max — remain dominant, buoyed by attractive carrier trade-in offers and upgrade deals. Meanwhile, Apple’s newest variant, the iPhone Air, has had a slower start. Positioned close in price to the Pro version, it’s found a modest niche, performing slightly better than last year’s iPhone 16 Plus.
In the UAE, retailers have reported strong demand and supply shortages, with Apple Store footfall up 50% year-on-year. Fans were seen paying thousands of dirhams above retail to secure early units.
Beyond strong early sales, the iPhone 17 lineup marks the beginning of what insiders call Apple’s “three-year innovation roadmap.” Sources in the Asian supply chain have hinted at major upcoming releases: a foldable iPhone in 2026 with a book-style hinge, a special 20th-anniversary model in 2027 featuring a “zero-bezel” display, and a compact clamshell-style foldable in 2028.
Camera performance is a major highlight this year. The iPhone 17 Pro models feature a new 8X zoom lens, improved video stabilisation, and advanced image processing that enhances colour accuracy and sharpness. The upgrades have even inspired a social media trend where users post side-by-side photos captioned “what I see vs what I captured.”
On the software front, iOS 26 brings enhanced lock-screen personalisation, allowing users to adjust clock placement and wallpaper alignment — features long requested by Apple fans. The Pro models’ new orange finish has also drawn attention, quickly becoming a visual status symbol.
However, analysts note that Apple’s progress in artificial intelligence remains muted compared to competitors. The company’s much-anticipated “Apple Intelligence” suite has yet to make the same impact seen in rival ecosystems.
Still, the iPhone 17 lineup has done what Apple needed most: reignite consumer excitement. With strong sales, design refinements, and a clear roadmap for innovation, the tech giant seems to be finding its rhythm again after years of incremental updates.
