Omani authorities have thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of alcoholic beverages into the Sultanate, arresting six Iranian nationals in the process, officials announced on Sunday.
According to a statement from the Royal Oman Police (ROP), the smuggling operation was intercepted in the Musandam Governorate, a strategic coastal region along the Strait of Hormuz. The illicit cargo was being transported aboard two boats when the suspects were apprehended.
“The Royal Oman Police successfully foiled an operation to smuggle alcoholic beverages into the country via the sea,” the agency said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Six individuals of Iranian nationality were arrested, and legal procedures are now underway.”
Authorities did not disclose the exact quantity of alcohol seized but described it as “large,” suggesting a significant black-market operation likely intended for underground distribution within Oman.
Oman maintains strict regulations on the importation, sale, and consumption of alcohol in accordance with its legal and cultural norms. While non-Muslims can purchase alcohol through licensed outlets, unauthorized transport and distribution remain criminal offenses. Penalties for smuggling can include heavy fines, imprisonment, and deportation.
The coastal waters of Musandam have long been a hotspot for smuggling due to their proximity to Iran and the complex maritime geography, which includes fjords and inlets that provide cover for illicit activity. Omani authorities have stepped up surveillance and enforcement efforts in recent years to counter these operations.
This latest incident highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring and securing the Sultanate’s borders against contraband. Despite increased patrols and technological support, smuggling—particularly of banned substances such as alcohol, drugs, and tobacco—continues to be a recurring issue.
The Royal Oman Police emphasized their commitment to protecting the country’s legal framework and maintaining public order. “We call on all citizens and residents to report any suspicious activity and support our efforts to safeguard the nation’s security,” the ROP added.
The identities of the arrested individuals have not been released. They remain in custody as legal proceedings move forward.
