China has reiterated its commitment to working with the European Union and the broader international community to uphold global trade rules and fight what it calls “economic bullying” by the United States. The remarks come amid escalating tensions over new U.S. tariffs that have drawn criticism from several global trading partners.
Speaking at a regular press briefing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian condemned the U.S. use of tariffs as a political and economic tool, calling it a move that prioritizes American self-interest over international norms and global economic stability.
“The United States uses tariffs as a weapon to exert maximum pressure and pursue selfish gains,” Lin said. “This is a typical example of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying.”
The comments were made in response to questions about China’s communication and coordination with the EU concerning Washington’s proposed tariff increases. While Lin did not specify details of those discussions, he emphasized that both China and the EU are aligned in their commitment to trade liberalization and the defense of the multilateral trading system.
“As the world’s second and third largest economies, China and the EU collectively account for more than one-third of global GDP and over a quarter of global trade,” Lin stated. “Both sides advocate for economic globalization and are firm defenders of the World Trade Organization (WTO).”
Lin referenced recent comments by EU leadership highlighting the need for stability and predictability in the global economy. He echoed those sentiments, underscoring the shared interest between China and the EU in maintaining a fair and rules-based international trade environment.
“The head of the EU underscored the vital importance of stability and certainty for a sound global economy,” Lin noted. “China and the EU are committed to a fair, free, and WTO-centered multilateral trading system. This is not just in our mutual interest, but essential for global trade.”
Lin added that China has already taken “resolute measures” to protect its interests in response to the rising tariffs and will continue to do so as necessary. He also called on the international community to reject economic coercion and support fair and equitable trade practices.
“China stands ready to step up communication and coordination with the EU and others, to share development opportunities, expand cooperation, and achieve mutual benefits,” he said. “We will not only safeguard our respective interests, but also defend international trade rules, fairness, and justice.”
The statement highlights China’s diplomatic push to rally allies against growing U.S. protectionism and maintain its position as a leading advocate of multilateralism amid intensifying global trade tensions.
