Authorities in Abu Dhabi have announced the successful completion of extensive rehabilitation works at Sir Bani Yas Airport, located 250 kilometers southwest of the Abu Dhabi coast in the Al Dhafra region. The upgrades are expected to enhance connectivity and support the growing number of visitors traveling to the island, known for its eco-tourism offerings and wildlife.
The renovation included the full reconstruction of the runway, taxiways, and apron pavements, improving the airport’s infrastructure for safer and more efficient operations. Additionally, the airport’s lighting systems were upgraded, with the Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system now featuring high-performance LED technology. A new Airfield Lighting Control System (ALCS) was also introduced to improve visibility for ground personnel and enhance night-time operations.
The runway has been widened to accommodate Code 4E aircraft, which allows the airport to handle larger planes and increase passenger capacity. Weather observation systems have been upgraded with advanced technology to provide more accurate and timely weather information. The construction of new service and emergency roadways will improve access and response times during urgent situations.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), highlighted the UAE’s ongoing commitment to maintaining its position as a global leader in aviation. “By investing in advanced infrastructure and adhering to the highest international standards of safety, efficiency, and sustainability, the UAE continues to enhance its aviation sector. The rehabilitation of Sir Bani Yas Airport aligns with this commitment, supporting seamless connectivity and contributing to the nation’s sustainable tourism and economic growth,” Al Suwaidi said.
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports, emphasized the importance of the upgrades in boosting the region’s tourism sector. “The completion of rehabilitation works at Sir Bani Yas Airport marks a significant milestone in our mission to strengthen the nation’s aviation infrastructure. This achievement is the result of close collaboration with the GCAA and reflects our dedication to operational excellence. The enhancements will not only improve the airport’s capacity but also support Al Dhafra’s continued growth as a premier eco-tourism destination,” Sorlini stated.
The project is part of broader efforts to promote sustainable growth and eco-tourism in the region, ensuring that visitors from around the world can explore the island’s natural beauty and wildlife with greater convenience and safety.
