Qatar Allows Use of National ID for Healthcare Access in System Overhaul

Qatar has introduced a new measure allowing residents to access healthcare services using their national identification card instead of a separate health card, in a move aimed at simplifying procedures across the country’s medical system.

The decision was announced by Public Health Minister Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud and will apply to major healthcare providers, including Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care Corporation, along with other facilities nationwide.

Under the updated system, residents can present their valid Qatari ID, commonly known as a QID, when seeking medical care. Healthcare providers will verify patient details electronically through the individual’s health number, removing the need for a physical health card.

Officials said the change is part of a broader effort to streamline administrative processes and improve efficiency within the healthcare sector. By reducing reliance on multiple forms of identification, authorities aim to make access to services quicker and more convenient for patients.

Despite the shift away from physical cards, the Ministry confirmed that existing fees tied to the health card system will remain in place. Residents will still be required to pay the previously approved charges, including annual renewal fees, even though the card itself will no longer be necessary for accessing services.

The move reflects a wider push by Qatari authorities to digitise public services and integrate systems across government institutions. By linking healthcare access directly to national identification, officials hope to reduce paperwork, minimise delays and enhance coordination between medical providers.

Healthcare providers are expected to implement the changes immediately, with electronic verification systems already in place to support the transition. Patients visiting hospitals or clinics will now be able to check in using their QID, with their medical records and eligibility details retrieved automatically.

Authorities said the initiative is also intended to improve the overall patient experience by cutting waiting times and simplifying registration procedures at healthcare facilities. It aligns with ongoing efforts to modernise public services and adopt digital solutions across key sectors.

The announcement marks a significant step in Qatar’s healthcare reforms, as the country continues to invest in infrastructure and technology to meet the needs of its growing population.
