Qatar Expands National Service Eligibility to Children of Qatari Mothers and Qatar-Born Residents

Qatar’s Ministry of Defence has broadened eligibility for its National Service programme, allowing children of Qatari mothers and individuals born in the country to apply, in a move aimed at increasing participation and expanding opportunities for qualified members of society.

The decision was issued by Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs, as part of efforts to widen access to national service for groups that were not previously required to serve.

Under the new regulations, applicants must be at least 18 years old and either have been born in Qatar or be the child of a Qatari mother. The ministry said the measure reflects its commitment to strengthening participation in national duty while providing eligible residents with an opportunity to contribute to the country’s development and security.

The Ministry of Defence outlined several conditions that applicants must meet before being accepted into the programme. Candidates are required to have a good conduct record and must not have been convicted of crimes involving dishonesty or breach of trust unless they have been legally rehabilitated.

Applicants must also be medically fit, successfully complete an admission interview and possess a valid Qatari residence permit. Individuals who have previously been dismissed from service are not eligible to apply.

The announcement marks a significant expansion of the National Service programme and provides greater clarity regarding eligibility requirements for residents who were previously outside the scope of mandatory service obligations.

Officials said the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen community participation and foster a sense of responsibility among eligible individuals living in the country.

The Ministry of Defence encouraged interested candidates who meet the requirements to submit applications through its official recruitment portal. Applications can be completed through the recruitment section of the ministry’s website.

Applicants are required to provide several supporting documents as part of the registration process. These include a copy of their Qatari identification card, a valid passport and, where applicable, proof of eligibility.

Those born in Qatar must submit a copy of their birth certificate. Children of Qatari mothers are required to provide a copy of their mother’s passport along with their own birth certificate.

The National Service programme plays an important role in preparing participants through military and civic training while promoting discipline, leadership and national responsibility.

The ministry said the latest decision is intended to create greater opportunities for qualified individuals to take part in the programme and contribute to national service, while ensuring that applicants meet the standards required for admission.

The expansion is expected to increase the pool of eligible participants and strengthen engagement with a wider segment of Qatar’s population.
