UN World Food Program Condemns Attack on Humanitarian Convoy in Gaza

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has strongly condemned a “horrifying incident” in the Gaza Strip, where a clearly marked convoy operated by the agency was fired upon by Israeli forces near the Wadi Gaza checkpoint.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the WFP described the events of January 5, when three vehicles carrying eight staff members came under fire despite having received prior clearance from Israeli authorities. According to the statement, at least 16 bullets struck the convoy, immobilizing the vehicles.

“This unacceptable event put the lives of our staff at tremendous risk,” the WFP said. “Fortunately, no staff members were injured, but the incident highlights the increasingly dangerous environment in which humanitarian workers operate.”

Call for Improved Security Conditions

The WFP emphasized the need for urgent improvements in security conditions in Gaza to ensure that humanitarian assistance can continue without jeopardizing the safety of aid workers.

“This unacceptable event is just the latest example of the complex and dangerous working environment that WFP and other agencies are navigating today,” the statement noted.

The agency also reiterated its call for all parties involved in the conflict to uphold international humanitarian law, protect civilian lives, and ensure the safe passage of humanitarian aid.

Rising Challenges in Gaza

The incident underscores the growing difficulties faced by humanitarian organizations operating in Gaza. The region has been a focal point of prolonged conflict, leaving aid agencies to contend with a volatile environment while trying to deliver lifesaving assistance to vulnerable populations.

Humanitarian corridors, such as those used by the WFP convoy, are meant to facilitate the safe transport of food, medicine, and other essentials. However, frequent breaches of these agreements have raised concerns about the safety of humanitarian workers and the continuity of aid delivery.

Global Condemnation

The WFP’s condemnation of the attack has added to the growing calls for accountability and adherence to international humanitarian norms in conflict zones. Advocacy groups and UN agencies have repeatedly highlighted the risks faced by aid workers in regions like Gaza, where security remains precarious.

The WFP’s appeal to all parties involved in the Gaza conflict reflects a broader plea for respect for the rules of war, which are designed to protect civilians and those delivering humanitarian aid.

Further investigations into the January 5 incident are expected, as the WFP and other UN agencies seek assurances that such incidents will not be repeated.
