The United Nations has intensified its call for Israeli forces to expedite their withdrawal from southern Lebanon and urged the Lebanese army to take over in those areas. The appeal comes amid ongoing Israeli incursions north of the Blue Line, the demarcation separating the two nations, according to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
In a press briefing, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the United Nations, confirmed reports of continued Israeli movements in the eastern sector of UNIFIL’s area of operations. Haq underscored the importance of adhering to the ceasefire agreement announced on November 27 and stressed the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which outlines measures to maintain peace and security along the border.
The ceasefire agreement, brokered in late November, provides a 60-day window for Israeli forces to complete their withdrawal south of the Blue Line. Approximately 24 days remain for Israel to comply with the timeline, during which the Lebanese army and security forces are expected to deploy along the border to ensure stability in the region.
Haq also highlighted the ongoing humanitarian efforts in Lebanon. The UN and its partner organizations are actively providing aid to displaced persons and facilitating the return of families to their communities following the ceasefire. These efforts are critical as Lebanon continues to recover from the devastating effects of recent conflicts and political instability.
The Blue Line, established in 2000 following Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, has remained a point of contention, with periodic skirmishes and accusations of violations by both sides. UNIFIL, which has been stationed in the region for decades, is tasked with monitoring the situation and supporting the implementation of Resolution 1701.
UN officials are urging both parties to fully utilize the newly established mechanism under the ceasefire agreement to address disputes and maintain communication. The mechanism is designed to prevent escalations and ensure coordinated efforts in line with international resolutions.
The situation in southern Lebanon remains a significant test for the international community’s ability to mediate lasting peace in a region marked by decades of conflict. With the clock ticking on the withdrawal timeline, all eyes are on Israel and Lebanon to honor their commitments and work toward a peaceful resolution.
