The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has emphasized the need for increased humanitarian aid and inclusive political reforms as Syria enters a new phase of recovery following 13 years of war. Pedersen made these remarks during his first visit to Damascus after the fall of the Assad regime, a trip that marks a pivotal moment for the conflict-torn nation.
“The changes in Syria bring great hope, but significant challenges remain,” Pedersen told reporters upon his arrival in the Syrian capital. He stressed the importance of getting the recovery process right from the outset.
Pedersen outlined several key priorities for Syria’s future. Foremost is the launch of an inclusive political process, which, he noted, must be led by Syrians themselves. This, he said, would be essential for establishing a sustainable path toward peace and stability.
Another pressing concern is the restoration of state institutions, with a focus on ensuring the delivery of essential services, maintaining public order, and bolstering security. “These elements are extremely important for Syria’s recovery,” Pedersen stated.
The humanitarian crisis in Syria remains critical, with millions displaced and struggling to access basic necessities. Pedersen called for immediate and increased humanitarian aid to address the urgent needs of the population, including refugees wishing to return to their homes. “This is extremely important,” he stressed, underscoring the dire situation faced by Syrians both within the country and abroad.
Economic recovery is also a key challenge, according to the UN envoy. Pedersen highlighted the necessity of resolving Syria’s economic issues quickly, including lifting sanctions to facilitate reconstruction efforts. “We hope to see a quick end to sanctions so that we can really rally around Syria’s reconstruction,” he said.
During his briefing, Pedersen referred to recent engagements with Syrians from diverse backgrounds, both within the country and the diaspora, as well as discussions with the international community. He noted a growing willingness among stakeholders to support Syria’s recovery. Pedersen also pointed to positive momentum from recent talks held in Jordan’s Aqaba province, which underscored regional and global interest in aiding Syria’s rebuilding efforts.
