The United Nations Security Council convened today to discuss strengthening cooperation with the Arab League to address pressing challenges in the Middle East and North Africa. The meeting was chaired by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, whose country holds the Council’s rotating presidency for January.
In his address, Attaf emphasized the importance of a strategic partnership between the United Nations and the Arab League to bolster diplomatic efforts for peace and security in the Arab world. He highlighted the urgency of coordinated action, citing the region’s rapid and perilous developments.
“There is a pressing need for a partnership that restores the value of Arab and UN diplomacy in laying the foundations of peace, security, and prosperity across the Arab world,” Attaf stated. He called for uniting efforts and strengthening initiatives to address the region’s complex challenges.
Attaf underscored the centrality of resolving the Palestinian issue as the cornerstone for achieving lasting security and stability in the Middle East. He urged the international community to seize what he called a “historic opportunity” to build on the recent Gaza ceasefire and revive the political process toward a two-state solution.
“This is an opportunity to correct the mistakes of the past and work toward a fair, permanent, and internationally supported resolution to the Palestinian issue,” he said.
Turning to Lebanon, Attaf highlighted the importance of cooperation between the UN and the Arab League to stabilize the country, which has been grappling with political and economic crises for years. He called for renewed efforts to protect Lebanon from further instability.
The discussion also addressed the ongoing conflict in Syria. Attaf emphasized the shared responsibility of the UN and Arab League to support Syria in restoring peace, achieving territorial sovereignty, and rebuilding stability.
The meeting reflected a shared understanding of the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the interconnected crises in the region. Attaf’s remarks underscored the potential for a stronger partnership between the UN and the Arab League to enhance diplomatic initiatives and promote sustainable solutions.
The Security Council will continue discussions on specific measures to implement these goals, with a focus on addressing the immediate humanitarian needs and laying the groundwork for long-term peace and development in the region.
