UN Peace Operations Chief Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Lebanon

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the head of UN Peace Operations, has called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701. This appeal came at the conclusion of his four-day visit to Lebanon, during which he met with senior Lebanese officials and peacekeepers.

Lacroix emphasized the crucial role of peacekeeping forces in preventing further escalation and supporting local communities during these turbulent times. “I commend the role played by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) leadership and peacekeepers in ensuring liaison between the parties, mitigating the risk of miscalculation, and preventing further escalation,” Lacroix stated.

Lacroix underscored the necessity of intensifying and sustaining contacts with authorities on both sides. He encouraged a return to the cessation of hostilities and a recommitment to Resolution 1701 as a pathway toward a long-term diplomatic solution. “Current events further demonstrate that this resolution is even more relevant now,” he noted. “It continues to serve as the appropriate framework to achieve progress toward a permanent ceasefire.”

The urgency of Lacroix’s call was highlighted by recent violence in the region. On Saturday, one person was killed and two others injured by an Israeli airstrike targeting a car near the town of Al-Bazourieh in southern Lebanon. Since October 7, 2023, Israel has escalated its air and artillery strikes on towns and villages in southern Lebanon, resulting in civilian casualties and the displacement of hundreds of families from their homes.

The conflict has intensified despite efforts by UNIFIL to maintain peace and stability in the area. Lacroix’s visit and his subsequent call for a ceasefire reflect the UN’s commitment to de-escalating the situation and finding a diplomatic resolution.

UN Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, calls for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, and the extension of the Lebanese government’s control over all its territory. The resolution also mandates the enhancement of UNIFIL’s presence in southern Lebanon to monitor the ceasefire and support the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Lacroix’s appeal for an immediate ceasefire and adherence to Resolution 1701 aims to address the current crisis and pave the way for lasting peace in the region. The UN’s ongoing efforts highlight the importance of international cooperation in resolving conflicts and supporting affected communities.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, hopeful for a swift de-escalation and a return to stability in Lebanon.
