UAE Records Over 12,000 Wi-Fi Breaches Since Start of 2025, Cyber Council Warns

The UAE’s Cyber Security Council has revealed that more than 12,000 Wi-Fi breaches have been recorded across the country since the beginning of 2025, accounting for around 35 percent of all cyberattacks registered this year.

According to the council, cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting open and free Wi-Fi networks to steal personal information, banking credentials, and passwords from unsuspecting users. These networks, commonly available in public areas such as airports, cafes, and shopping malls, often lack adequate protection, making them a key target for hackers.

Experts warn that connecting to unsecured Wi-Fi exposes users to a wide range of risks, including “man-in-the-middle” attacks. In such cases, attackers can intercept data, redirect users to fraudulent websites, listen in on calls, or secretly install spyware and malware on devices. These activities can compromise not only personal privacy but also sensitive financial and corporate data.

To counter these risks, the Cyber Security Council has recommended three essential precautions for anyone browsing the internet through public networks. Users are urged to install trusted virtual private network (VPN) applications to encrypt connections, activate the “Safe Browsing” feature in their internet browsers, and avoid logging into critical accounts such as banking portals or email while using open Wi-Fi.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Government Cybersecurity Council, stressed that safeguarding cyberspace is a national priority. He said the UAE is committed to protecting citizens and residents from evolving cyber threats while ensuring that the country keeps pace with rapid technological advancements. “Our efforts are part of a wider national vision to boost trust in the digital ecosystem, foster a culture of cybersecurity, and raise awareness about the importance of safe online practices,” he said.

The council underscored that VPNs not only provide privacy but also play a crucial role in protecting digital identity in an interconnected world where breaches are becoming increasingly common. It highlighted that prevention, combined with public awareness, represents the first and most effective line of defense against cybercrime.

As part of its broader awareness drive, the Cyber Security Council has launched weekly campaigns under its “Cyber Pulse” initiative. This year’s second campaign week is themed “Free Wi-Fi may reveal your personal data.” The initiative aims to educate both individuals and institutions about the dangers of using unsecured networks, while offering practical guidance on safeguarding personal data and countering cyber threats.

Officials hope that by promoting vigilance and safe practices, the campaign will strengthen the UAE’s cyber resilience and reinforce its standing as a global leader in digital security.
