The United Arab Emirates’ floating hospital docked in Al Arish, Egypt, has successfully completed two intricate surgeries for Palestinian patients, the UAE’s state news agency WAM reported on Saturday. These procedures mark a significant milestone in the hospital’s mission to provide urgent medical care to those affected by ongoing conflicts in Gaza, part of a broader humanitarian initiative launched by the UAE.
The first of the two surgeries involved a female patient suffering from a recurring shoulder dislocation, a complication resulting from an injury sustained in the Gaza war. Medical specialists performed an arthroscopic procedure to repair and stabilize the joint, alleviating the dislocation. Following the surgery, the patient began physiotherapy and has shown notable improvement, regaining increased shoulder mobility, according to WAM.
In the second operation, the medical team treated a patient with severe complications in her right knee joint caused by fractures that left her unable to bend her knee. Surgeons removed adhesions and successfully restored her knee’s flexion to 120 degrees. The procedure has allowed the patient to regain much of her knee movement, a significant step toward her physical recovery.
This floating hospital has been a vital lifeline for Palestinian patients, particularly since it began operations in February. It boasts a comprehensive range of medical facilities and specialized units, including a physiotherapy department that opened last week. The hospital is equipped with advanced operating theaters, intensive care and anesthesia units, and fully outfitted outpatient clinics. Additional resources include X-ray facilities, a pharmacy, and a laboratory, all of which ensure the hospital can deliver extensive care for complex conditions.
With a capacity of 100 beds and an additional 100 beds available for patients’ companions, the hospital continues to play a crucial role in easing the healthcare crisis impacting Gaza’s civilians. Medical care for these patients often requires specialized surgeries and rehabilitation services not readily accessible in the region.
The floating hospital operates under “Operation Chivalrous Knight 3,” a humanitarian mission initiated by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The operation is part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to provide aid and medical support to Palestinians, focusing on those affected by recent conflicts in Gaza.
