Trump Says He Takes Higher Dose of Aspirin Than Doctors Recommend

Former U.S. President Donald Trump told the Wall Street Journal that he takes a larger daily dose of aspirin than his doctors advise. In an interview published Thursday, Trump said he wants “nice, thin blood pouring through my heart,” noting that his daily regimen exceeds standard recommendations.

Trump, 79, is the second-oldest person to hold the presidency, following Joe Biden, who left office at 82 after choosing not to seek re-election in 2024 amid concerns over his fitness for office. Trump’s health has drawn attention recently after observers noted bruises on his hands, reports of a preventive MRI last October, and moments during public events when he appeared to close his eyes.

Aspirin is often used to lower the risk of heart attack or stroke in people over 60, with low doses typically around 81 mg, according to the Mayo Clinic. Trump’s physician, Sean Barbabella, told the Journal that the former president takes 325 mg daily for cardiac prevention.

The White House attributed the bruising on Trump’s hands to frequent handshakes and said the October MRI was a preventative measure. Observers have also noted swelling in his ankles, and Trump has occasionally appeared to struggle to keep his eyes open during meetings. In one instance during an Oval Office meeting with health officials in November, he briefly closed his eyes. Trump said he was not dozing but simply found it “very relaxing” and added that photographs sometimes capture him mid-blink.

When asked about the imaging test, Trump and Barbabella clarified that he had a CT scan, not an MRI. Barbabella said the doctors initially considered either an MRI or CT but chose the latter “to definitively rule out any cardiovascular issues.” The scan reportedly showed no abnormalities.

Trump also highlighted his overall health and cognitive performance, posting on Truth Social that the White House doctors had confirmed he is in “PERFECT HEALTH” and had “ACED” his cognitive examination for the third consecutive time. He emphasized that no previous president or vice president had voluntarily taken the test.

The former president has frequently projected an image of vigor, both in public appearances and on social media. This persona includes energetic interactions with journalists, frequent online posting, and internet memes portraying him as highly capable or heroic.

Trump’s comments on his aspirin use add to ongoing public scrutiny of his health as he continues to remain active in political and public life.
