Strong Aftershocks Continue to Shake Kuril Islands Following Major Quake

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck east of the Kuril Islands on Thursday, adding to a series of powerful aftershocks following the massive 8.8-magnitude quake that rocked the region earlier this week.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), Thursday’s quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, increasing the likelihood of aftershocks and potential surface damage. It followed a magnitude 6.3 tremor that hit the same region on Wednesday, also at a depth of 10 km.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that more than 125 aftershocks measuring 4.4 or higher have shaken the region since the initial 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s far eastern coast. That powerful quake, one of the strongest ever recorded globally, occurred near the Kamchatka Peninsula and triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific Rim.

Of the dozens of aftershocks, at least three have registered a magnitude of 6.0 or higher. The most powerful among them was a 6.9-magnitude jolt that struck approximately 45 minutes after the initial quake on Wednesday, further rattling residents and emergency responders.

A 6.4-magnitude tremor also struck roughly 200 miles southwest of the main quake’s epicentre, continuing the seismic unrest in the tectonically active region.

Seismologists warn that aftershocks are expected to persist in the days and even weeks ahead, although their intensity and frequency will gradually decrease over time. “Aftershocks tend to follow a pattern of declining strength, but events of this size are still capable of causing significant disruption and anxiety in affected communities,” said a USGS spokesperson.

The Kuril Islands, part of a seismically active arc between Russia and Japan, frequently experience earthquakes due to the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the North American Plate.

Emergency services in Russia and neighbouring countries remain on alert, with assessments of structural damage and safety conditions ongoing. So far, there have been no reports of major casualties from the latest aftershocks, but authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

As seismic activity continues in the region, experts are urging residents to remain cautious, avoid unstable structures, and prepare for additional tremors in the coming days.
