A series of tragic stampedes in Nigeria over the weekend claimed at least 32 lives, with the incidents occurring during food distribution events in different regions of the country.

Police confirmed the toll, with Anambra police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga expressing condolences to the victims’ families and announcing an ongoing investigation. Initial reports had only described the death toll as “many.”
On the same day, another deadly stampede occurred in Abuja, the capital, during a food distribution event at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama district. The event, aimed at assisting the “vulnerable and elderly,” turned chaotic, leaving 10 people dead, including four children. Eight others were injured in the crush, according to police.
Presidential Condolences and Nationwide Grief
The dual tragedies prompted Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to cancel his schedule to address the situation and offer condolences. “In a season of joy and celebration, we grieve with fellow citizens mourning the painful losses of their loved ones. Our prayers of divine comfort and healing are with them,” the president said in a statement.
The incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in managing large crowds during relief distributions in Nigeria, a country with over 200 million residents.
Recent Stampede in Ibadan Adds to Concerns
Saturday’s events followed another fatal incident earlier in the week. On Thursday, a stampede at a school funfair in the southwestern city of Ibadan left 35 children dead and six gravely injured. The recurring nature of such tragedies has raised concerns about crowd management and safety protocols during public gatherings.
