Somali authorities have announced the successful execution of a military operation that resulted in the deaths of 40 ISIS fighters and the injury of several others in the Cal Miskaad mountains of Bari Province, Puntland State. The operation, conducted by Somali counter-terrorism forces, took place on Wednesday as part of ongoing efforts to combat militant groups in the region.
According to Somali National News Agency (SONNA), military officials leading the mission confirmed that the majority of those killed were foreign fighters operating within ISIS ranks.
The operation targeted key militant hideouts in the northeastern region of Somalia, an area that has long been used as a stronghold by extremist groups. Somali forces now control all the sites affected by the military action, officials said, adding that the mission will continue until the remaining militants are fully eliminated.
The Somali government has intensified its counter-terrorism campaign in recent months, aiming to weaken ISIS and al-Shabaab strongholds across the country. Puntland, in particular, has seen increased military activity due to its strategic location and its history as a base for extremist factions.
Security analysts say that the success of this operation marks a significant blow to ISIS’s influence in the region, though continued efforts will be needed to ensure long-term stability. Somali authorities have vowed to keep up the offensive until militant threats are fully neutralized.
