Philippine Government Arranges Special Flight to Repatriate Citizens from UAE

The Philippine government has arranged a special repatriation flight to bring home hundreds of Filipino nationals from the United Arab Emirates, with the aircraft scheduled to depart from Fujairah International Airport on March 13.

A total of 480 seats have been allocated for the chartered flight, which will transport more than 450 Filipinos back to the Philippines. The entire cost of the tickets has been covered by the government as part of efforts to assist citizens who have been unable to return home through regular travel options.

Hans Leo Cacdac, secretary of the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers, arrived in Dubai on Friday and is expected to personally accompany the returning passengers on the journey. Speaking to local media, Cacdac said the government had coordinated the charter flight to ensure Filipinos in need of assistance could return safely.

Among those scheduled to travel are approximately 270 overseas Filipino workers and their family members. These workers, often referred to as OFWs, represent a large community of Filipinos employed abroad, particularly in Gulf countries where many work in construction, healthcare, domestic services and other sectors.

In addition to workers and their dependents, more than 130 stranded tourists are also expected to board the flight. Many of them have been waiting for an opportunity to return home after facing travel disruptions or other logistical challenges.

One of the passengers is 70-year-old Marisol Baligod, who had been visiting family in Sharjah. Baligod had planned to return to the Philippines on March 6 after spending two months with relatives, but her departure was delayed. The special flight now offers her and other travellers a chance to finally make the journey home.

Philippine officials said the repatriation effort forms part of ongoing assistance programs for overseas Filipinos. The government regularly organises evacuation or return flights when citizens face difficulties abroad, particularly during emergencies, conflicts or major travel disruptions.

The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers has been coordinating with authorities in the United Arab Emirates and other agencies to arrange transportation, documentation and other requirements for the passengers. Officials said the priority was given to those who had been stranded the longest as well as workers and families seeking immediate assistance.

The Philippines has one of the largest overseas labour forces in the world, with millions of its citizens working in foreign countries. Remittances sent by these workers play a significant role in supporting families and contributing to the national economy.

Authorities said the government remains committed to providing support for Filipinos abroad and ensuring that those wishing to return home during difficult circumstances are able to do so safely and efficiently.
