Monsoon Devastation in Northern India Claims 78 Lives as Search for Missing Continues

Himachal Pradesh, India – At least 78 people have lost their lives in northern India after heavy monsoon rains triggered flash floods, landslides, and traffic accidents across Himachal Pradesh on June 20, according to the state’s disaster management authority.

The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority confirmed that 50 of the fatalities occurred in landslides and flash floods, while an additional 28 were killed in road accidents caused by the extreme weather conditions. The district of Mandi was hit hardest, recording 17 deaths, followed by Kangra with 11.

Rescue operations are ongoing as disaster response teams scour affected areas in search of missing individuals, particularly in the districts of Mandi and Kullu. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as rescue efforts continue in remote and mountainous regions that remain difficult to access due to damaged infrastructure.

The monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September, often brings widespread devastation to parts of India, but this year’s impact has been especially severe in Himachal Pradesh. Torrential rainfall caused rivers to overflow and hillsides to collapse, sweeping away homes, vehicles, and roads.

State officials reported substantial damage to public infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and power lines. Schools, health centres, and residential areas have also been affected, while the agricultural sector—critical to the region’s economy—suffered major losses.

In a statement, local authorities said relief and rehabilitation efforts were being prioritised. “We have deployed teams from the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force to support search and rescue operations, and to assist with the distribution of food, water, and medical aid,” a senior official said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims’ families and assured full support to the state government. “The loss of lives due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh is deeply saddening. We are monitoring the situation closely and stand with those affected in this difficult time,” he posted on social media.

Meteorological officials have warned of continued heavy rain in the coming days and advised residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories. Evacuation orders have been issued for particularly vulnerable settlements near riverbanks and landslide-prone zones.

As climate-related disasters become more frequent and intense in India, officials have reiterated calls for improved early warning systems and better preparedness in rural and hilly regions.
