Meta Rolls Out New Facebook Reels Features to Boost Engagement and Discovery

Meta has unveiled a series of new updates to its Reels feature on the Facebook app, introducing tools designed to improve user engagement, content discovery, and interaction between friends.

The company announced that Facebook’s upgraded recommendation algorithm now learns user preferences more quickly, enabling the app to serve fresher and more relevant short videos. Meta said the update has led to a 50% increase in the visibility of newly uploaded content, allowing users to discover videos from creators on the same day they are posted.

Among the standout additions is a new feature called “Friend Bubbles,” which appears in the corner of a video when a user’s friend has liked it. By tapping the bubble, viewers can instantly start a private conversation about the video, adding a social and interactive dimension to the viewing experience. Meta said the feature aims to make content discovery more personal and to encourage conversations around shared interests.

The company emphasized that the latest improvements expand upon major updates introduced earlier this year. In June, Facebook merged all video formats — including live, long-form, and short clips — into the Reels category, while removing time limits on videos. That change was intended to streamline the user experience and strengthen Facebook’s position in the fast-growing short-form video space.

Meta’s move comes amid rising competition in the global short-video market, where platforms such as TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels continue to compete for user attention and screen time. By refining its recommendation system and adding more interactive tools, Meta aims to boost engagement levels and encourage users to spend more time watching and sharing videos on Facebook.

In a statement, the company said the ongoing evolution of Reels reflects Meta’s broader strategy to make video a central part of the Facebook experience. “We’re focused on helping people connect through videos that matter to them — and helping creators reach new audiences more effectively,” the company noted.

With these latest updates, Facebook users can expect a more dynamic, social, and tailored video experience — one that prioritizes real-time discovery and closer connections between friends and communities.
