At least 24 people were killed when gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists in the scenic town of Pahalgam on Sunday, in what officials have described as the deadliest attack on civilians in the region in years.
The assault took place near a popular meadow just outside the town, around 90 kilometers from Srinagar, the capital of Indian-administered Kashmir. Authorities say dozens more were wounded as chaos erupted and panicked visitors fled the area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous act,” and vowed that those responsible “will be brought to justice.” The gunmen fled the scene, and no group has claimed responsibility.
“This attack on our visitors is an abomination,” said Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. “The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman and worthy of contempt.”
Witnesses described the horror as gunmen emerged from nearby forests and began shooting indiscriminately. A horse guide, Waheed, said he rushed to the scene after hearing gunfire and used ponies to transport the injured to safety. Another local, who cares for horses used by tourists, said the attackers appeared to deliberately spare women while targeting men, firing both single shots and volleys in a brutal assault.
“They all started running around in panic,” the witness said. “We tried to comfort them, but they were just screaming.”
The attack has sparked international condemnation. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who is currently visiting India, expressed his condolences on social media. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack,” he wrote.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump also weighed in, posting on Truth Social: “The US stands strong with India against terrorism… Prime Minister Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies.”
India’s Interior Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kashmir shortly after the attack and pledged swift justice. “Those involved in this dastardly act of terror will not be spared,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition Congress party, called the attack “heartbreaking” and reaffirmed the country’s unity in the fight against terrorism.
The violence comes amid a boom in tourism to Kashmir, with more than 3.5 million people visiting the region in 2024. Pahalgam, long known for its picturesque landscapes and hiking trails, has been promoted as a top destination for both summer and winter holidays.
Security forces have launched a manhunt for the attackers, and investigations are ongoing.
