Funeral Prayers Held in Makkah for Saudi Student Killed in UK

Funeral prayers were held in Makkah on Friday for Saudi student Mohammed Al Qasim, who was allegedly killed in an unprovoked attack in the United Kingdom. The 23-year-old had been in Cambridge on a 10-week placement to study English when the fatal incident occurred.

Al Qasim, remembered for his years of volunteer service assisting pilgrims at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, was laid to rest in the city where he once devoted his time to guiding and helping visitors to the Kaaba. His funeral took place immediately after the Friday prayers at Masjid Al Haram, attended by family, friends, and members of the community who came to pay their respects.

The Saudi Arabian embassy in the UK confirmed it had facilitated the repatriation of his body to the Kingdom and was working closely with British authorities to investigate the circumstances of his death. “The embassy and all its staff extend their sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, asking God Almighty to have mercy on him,” the mission said in a statement earlier this week.

According to Cambridgeshire Police, officers responded to reports of violence in the Mill Park area of Cambridge shortly before midnight last Friday. Upon arrival, they found Al Qasim with serious injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he died at the scene. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

Tributes have poured in for Al Qasim from those who knew him both in Saudi Arabia and abroad. Inside the Haramain, a platform dedicated to the Two Holy Mosques, expressed its grief on social media, describing him as “more than a volunteer” to those who served alongside him. “He was a shining example of quiet dedication and heartfelt service,” the statement read.

Friends and colleagues recalled his humility, kindness, and commitment to helping others, noting that his work in Makkah left a lasting impression on countless pilgrims. His untimely death has sparked an outpouring of condolences from across the Kingdom and beyond, with many calling for swift justice in the case.

As Makkah bid farewell to one of its own, mourners reflected on the tragic loss of a young man whose life was cut short far from home, but whose legacy of service and devotion will endure in the hearts of those he touched.
