A massive wildfire in the southeastern town of Uiseong remains out of control due to unexpectedly strong winds and extremely dry conditions, South Korean government officials announced on Tuesday. Authorities report that containment efforts are becoming increasingly difficult, with the fire spreading rapidly across the region.
According to the Korean government, wildfires sweeping through the southeastern part of the country over the past few days have already burned 14,694 hectares of land. The fires have resulted in the deaths of four people, injuries to 15 others, and the displacement of more than 3,300 residents.
Acting Interior Minister Ko Ki-dong, speaking to the Yonhap News Agency, stated that firefighting efforts are being severely hampered by harsh weather conditions, including powerful winds and extreme dryness. He noted that as of Tuesday morning, approximately 88% of the fire had been contained, but authorities remain concerned about the potential for further spread, particularly into residential areas.
“The government is making every possible effort to prevent the fires from advancing into populated areas,” Ko said.
The wildfire crisis has added to concerns over the increasing frequency of such disasters in South Korea. Officials reported that so far in 2024, there have been 234 wildfires across the country. Many of these fires were attributed to human activities, including accidental blazes caused by visitors, as well as the burning of agricultural waste and garbage.
Emergency response teams continue to battle the flames with aircraft and ground crews, but shifting weather patterns pose ongoing challenges. Officials have urged residents in high-risk areas to remain alert and follow evacuation orders if necessary.
The South Korean government is expected to implement additional measures to address the growing wildfire threat, including stricter regulations on activities that could spark fires and increased investment in firefighting resources.

Authorities are working around the clock to bring the situation under control, but with strong winds fanning the flames, containment remains a difficult task. Firefighters and emergency responders are prioritizing residential areas to minimize further casualties and property damage.
