The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued an urgent warning about the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, calling for the immediate lifting of aid restrictions.
Hamish Faulkner, Minister for the Middle East and North Africa at the FCDO, highlighted the dire situation, stating that the two-week-long blockade on life-saving aid has severely impacted food, water, and healthcare access in Gaza. According to Faulkner, only 10 percent of Gazans currently have access to drinking water, underscoring the urgent need for relief efforts.
Faulkner’s statement follows multiple warnings from UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating conditions in the region. Lammy has urged Israeli authorities to lift restrictions preventing humanitarian aid and electricity from reaching Gaza, warning that the ongoing blockade is exacerbating civilian suffering.
In addition to his call for action, Lammy reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting the United Nations’ humanitarian efforts in Gaza. He emphasized the critical role of the UN in providing assistance to Palestinian civilians and stressed the need for international cooperation to address the crisis.
The UK government’s appeal comes amid growing international pressure on Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, as reports indicate worsening shortages of essential supplies.
