OpenAI has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence tool, “Operator,” designed to handle everyday online tasks, from filling out forms to placing orders. The announcement, made on Thursday, marks a significant step in the evolution of AI as a practical assistant for consumers and businesses alike.
Operator can navigate web pages by mimicking human interactions such as typing, clicking, and scrolling. According to OpenAI, the tool is tailored to perform repetitive browser tasks like ordering groceries, completing online forms, and even generating memes.
“The ability to use the same interfaces and tools that humans interact with daily broadens the utility of AI,” OpenAI stated in an online post. “It helps people save time on routine tasks while offering businesses new engagement opportunities.”
Part of the AI “Agent” Trend
Operator joins a growing field of AI “agents”—digital helpers designed to sense their surroundings, make decisions, and take action to achieve specific goals. Google and other Silicon Valley players have already made strides in this area, with Google introducing agent capabilities in its Gemini 2.0 AI model last month. Similarly, OpenAI rival Anthropic introduced a “computer use” feature in its Claude AI model late last year, allowing it to mimic human computer interactions.
Addressing Potential Mistakes
While Operator boasts advanced capabilities, OpenAI acknowledges that errors can occur. The AI tool is designed to “self-correct” when challenges arise. For more complex issues, such as tasks requiring login credentials, payment details, or solving CAPTCHA security tests, Operator can hand control back to the user.
The program is currently available only to U.S. users with Pro subscriptions to OpenAI’s service, a move OpenAI says is intended to ensure a controlled and safe rollout.
“If it encounters challenges or makes mistakes, Operator leverages its reasoning capabilities to adapt,” OpenAI said.
Multitasking Capabilities
One of Operator’s standout features is its ability to run multiple tasks simultaneously. For instance, users can instruct the AI to order a personalized mug on Etsy while booking a campsite on Hipcamp in a separate conversation.
