The United Arab Emirates has recorded a 32% increase in ransomware attacks in 2024, along with an 18% rise in cyber threats such as phishing, Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, and online scams, according to Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, chairman of the UAE Cyber Security Council.
Speaking at the Proofpoint Protect cybersecurity conference in Dubai, Al Kuwaiti credited strong partnerships with the private sector and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for successfully deterring these cyber threats.
Cyber Threats Driven by Financial Motives
Al Kuwaiti emphasized that cybercrime remains financially motivated, with 65% of attacks involving ransomware, impersonation, scams, and fraud. He also highlighted that UAE and other Gulf countries rank high in the United Nations Global Cybersecurity Index, reflecting their commitment to cyber defense.
The event, organized by American cybersecurity firm Proofpoint, also featured a keynote address by the company’s CEO, Sumit Dhawan, who outlined new cybersecurity solutions being introduced in the UAE and the wider region.
Growing Threat of Cyberterrorism on Social Media
Beyond ransomware and scams, social media platforms are increasingly being exploited for misinformation and cyberterrorism, Al Kuwaiti warned. These platforms are being used to spread radical ideologies and manipulate public discourse.
“Ransomware is targeting critical infrastructure, including healthcare, and it’s not just a technology issue—it’s a human problem that affects all of us,” he said.
UAE’s Cybersecurity Strategy and ‘Year of Community’ Initiative
To counter these threats, the UAE Cyber Security Council has been working closely with companies like Proofpoint and other partners. This collaboration aligns with the UAE’s declaration of 2025 as the ‘Year of Community’, an initiative aimed at strengthening cyber defense through collective efforts.
“We are constantly adapting to new technologies to combat cyber threats and defend against attacks targeting both government entities and individuals,” Al Kuwaiti stated.
Advanced Cybersecurity Measures in Place
The UAE has developed a smart and advanced cybersecurity system capable of predicting and neutralizing cyberattacks before they occur. According to Al Kuwaiti, over 50,000 cyberattacks target key sectors in the country daily, but proactive measures successfully deter these threats.
To stay ahead of cybercriminals, the UAE is also actively investing in innovation, intellectual property, and emerging technologies to strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure.
With cyber threats continuing to evolve, the UAE remains committed to staying at the forefront of global cybersecurity efforts, ensuring the safety of its digital ecosystem and critical infrastructure.
