Etihad Airways Unveils Airbus A321LR as Part of Major Expansion Plan

Etihad Airways announced on Monday the introduction of the Airbus A321LR to its fleet, marking a significant step in the airline’s ambitious expansion following a year of record profits.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier revealed that the first A321LR aircraft will begin service on August 1, 2025. A total of 10 A321LRs are expected to join the fleet this year, connecting passengers from Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport to an array of new destinations, including Algiers, Athens, Bangkok, Chennai, Copenhagen, Paris, Zurich, and several others across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Looking ahead, Etihad plans to add around 20 new aircraft annually through 2027, with the goal of operating a fleet of 170 planes and serving 33 million passengers a year. CEO Antonoaldo Neves emphasized the airline’s growth strategy, stating, “In 2025, we will add between 20 to 22 new planes. We’re gaining about 20 planes each year for the next four to five years.”

The A321LR introduction is a key element of Etihad’s 2030 vision to double its fleet, triple passenger numbers, and launch 16 new destinations by 2025.

In line with its reputation for premium service, Etihad’s new A321LR will feature luxurious amenities previously reserved for long-haul flights. The aircraft boasts two exclusive First Suites, offering enclosed private spaces with lie-flat beds, gourmet dining, and bespoke interiors. It marks the first time Etihad brings its full widebody First Class experience to a narrow-body aircraft.

Business Class passengers will enjoy widebody-style seats, all with direct aisle access, 17.3-inch 4K entertainment screens, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless charging, and generous personal storage. Economy Class features 144 ergonomic seats with up to a five-inch recline, 13.3-inch 4K touchscreens, and USB charging ports.

Etihad also announced enhanced services for First Class travelers, including a private chauffeur service, expedited check-in at Zayed International Airport, and personalized ground handling. Future amenities will include Home Check-In and Land & Leave services, offering guests a seamless, baggage-free airport experience.

“First isn’t just a seat — it’s an experience that starts the moment you choose to fly with us,” Neves said.

The addition of the A321LR and the upgraded service offerings are poised to solidify Etihad’s position as a leader in luxury air travel as it continues its ambitious global expansion.
