Air India Flight Makes Precautionary Landing in Mongolia After Suspected Technical Issue

An Air India flight from San Francisco to Delhi via Kolkata made an unscheduled landing in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on Saturday after the crew detected a possible technical issue mid-flight, the airline confirmed in a statement.

Flight AI174, operating on November 2, landed safely at the Chinggis Khaan International Airport, where technical teams began conducting precautionary checks on the aircraft. “The aircraft made a precautionary landing following a suspected technical issue,” an Air India spokesperson said. “All passengers and crew are safe, and the aircraft is undergoing necessary inspections.”

The airline said it was coordinating with local and international partners to assist passengers and ensure they reached their destinations as soon as possible. “We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers due to this unforeseen situation,” the spokesperson added. “At Air India, the safety of passengers and crew remains our highest priority.”

Following the safe landing, passengers were provided assistance while the aircraft underwent detailed inspection by maintenance engineers. Although Air India did not specify the nature of the technical concern, such precautionary measures are standard procedure when onboard systems indicate potential irregularities.

This is the second Air India flight in recent weeks to be diverted due to a suspected technical issue. On October 25, a Vienna–New Delhi flight was rerouted to Dubai under similar circumstances. That aircraft also landed safely, underwent necessary checks, and later continued its journey after clearance. Passengers on the Dubai-diverted flight were kept informed throughout the delay and provided with refreshments, according to the airline.

Air India, which is part of the Tata Group, has been focusing on improving its operational safety and reliability as part of a broader transformation plan launched after its privatization in 2022. The airline has been modernizing its fleet and investing in staff training and maintenance protocols to meet international safety standards.

Aviation analysts noted that precautionary landings, while inconvenient for travelers, underscore the airline’s adherence to strict safety measures. “In-flight safety alerts are designed to err on the side of caution,” said one aviation expert. “A diversion may disrupt schedules, but it’s a sign that safety systems and protocols are working as intended.”

Passengers from flight AI174 are expected to continue their journey to India once engineers complete the technical evaluations and the aircraft is cleared for departure.
