The US State Department has approved the potential sale of Patriot interceptor missiles and associated equipment to Saudi Arabia, with the Pentagon estimating the deal at $9 billion. The announcement was made on Friday as officials emphasized that the transaction would not shift the military balance in the Middle East.
The sale involves the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement Missiles, known as PAC-3 MSE, which are designed to intercept incoming missiles and enhance air defense capabilities. Lockheed Martin Corp has been named as the principal contractor for the supply and support of the missile system, according to a Pentagon statement.
Saudi Arabia requested the purchase of 730 PAC-3 MSE missiles, along with related launchers, radars, and support equipment. The package also includes technical support and training for Saudi military personnel. Pentagon officials noted that the proposed sale would not compromise US defense readiness and would ensure that the country maintains sufficient resources for its own operational needs.
The approval reflects ongoing security cooperation between the United States and Saudi Arabia, particularly in the area of missile defense.
