Apple has officially released iOS 18.5, the latest version of its mobile operating system, bringing a range of new features and refinements aimed at enhancing the user experience across supported iPhones.
Among the most notable additions in iOS 18.5 is the expansion of satellite messaging to the iPhone 13 lineup. Previously limited to newer models, this feature enables users to send messages even when they are outside of traditional cellular coverage areas, offering increased reliability in remote or emergency situations. However, Apple has confirmed that Emergency SOS via satellite will remain available only on iPhone 14 and later models.
The update also includes enhanced parental control features designed to make device monitoring more seamless for families. With iOS 18.5, parents will now receive alerts when their children attempt to extend screen time limits using the device passcode. This new functionality allows for more discreet oversight without requiring physical access to the child’s device.
The Mail app has also received improvements, although Apple has not disclosed specific details. The company noted that the refinements are focused on streamlining the overall user experience.
While iOS 18.5 primarily focuses on usability and communication features, it builds on capabilities introduced in earlier versions of iOS 18, which included a number of cutting-edge personalization and productivity tools. These features include Image Playground, which lets users create customized images; Genmoji, which allows for the creation of personalized emoji characters; and new AI-powered writing tools integrated into apps such as Mail and Notes.
Additionally, Siri continues to evolve with enhanced conversational abilities, now integrating more advanced voice responses and context awareness.
These advanced features, however, remain exclusive to high-end devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and newer models.
Apple has not yet indicated whether future updates will expand these tools to older devices, but the release of iOS 18.5 marks a continued push toward improved connectivity, safety, and user-centric design.
Users can download the iOS 18.5 update by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update on their iPhones.
