Residents of bustling Dubai neighborhoods such as Karama and Fahidi are eagerly anticipating the transformation of their communities into car-free, pedestrian-friendly zones. Under the city’s newly announced ‘Super Block’ initiative, these areas will soon see reduced traffic congestion, improved air quality, and more green spaces, making them more livable and environmentally sustainable.
For longtime Karama resident Amreen Sheikh, the project is a much-needed step toward a cleaner, quieter, and more walkable neighborhood. “Our area is always packed on weekends because of the many restaurants here. This initiative will help reduce traffic and improve air quality,” she said. Sheikh, who lives in the Pioneer Building, believes more walkways and shaded areas will encourage residents to opt for short walks rather than using their cars for nearby destinations.
The initiative is part of Dubai’s broader vision for a greener urban environment and will cover not just Karama but also Fahidi, Abu Hail, and Al Quoz Creative Zone. It aims to promote walking and cycling, cut down on car usage, and foster community engagement through expanded public spaces.
Encouraging Community Interaction
For Abu Hail resident Haya AbuNael, the project offers a chance to connect more with her neighborhood. “When streets become walking zones, people naturally engage more with their surroundings and neighbors,” she said. AbuNael also sees the initiative as a boost for local businesses, as increased foot traffic will likely lead to more customers.
Currently, AbuNael takes her children to Al Mamzar Beach for walks and cycling due to limited pedestrian space around her building. “Once this initiative is implemented, we can just step outside and enjoy greenery right in our neighborhood,” she added.
Addressing Skepticism
While excitement is high, some residents have questions about how the transition will unfold. Nabil Syed, a businessman in Al Fahidi, expressed uncertainty about the feasibility of making a busy area car-free. “It’s hard to imagine how a place like this will function without cars,” he said. However, Syed remains confident in Dubai’s leadership. “Every project the city undertakes is always beneficial to its residents,” he added.
A Step Toward a Sustainable Future
Experts see the ‘Super Block’ initiative as a major step toward sustainable urban living. Thomas Edelmann, founder of RoadSafetyUAE, praised the project as a creative solution to ease congestion and enhance community life. “This initiative will reduce the need for vehicles, easing traffic and improving the overall quality of life in these areas,” he said.
As Dubai continues to introduce innovative urban planning solutions, residents are eager to see how the ‘Super Block’ initiative will reshape their communities, offering them a greener and more pedestrian-friendly future.
