Sheikh Hamdan Launches ‘Erth Dubai’ to Preserve Emirate’s History

A new initiative, Erth Dubai, has been launched to document and preserve the rich history and heritage of Dubai through the personal stories and experiences of its residents. Announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE, the initiative seeks to strengthen the collective memory of the emirate and highlight its transformation over the years.

“We invite everyone to take part in this initiative… Together, we write Dubai’s history in the voices of its people… We carry its past into its future,” Sheikh Hamdan said at the launch event on Sunday, February 2.

An Interactive Platform for Community Stories

As part of Erth Dubai, an interactive platform is being developed to collect personal accounts from individuals and families, capturing Dubai’s evolution through the eyes of its people. Members of the community, including students, government employees, and private citizens, are encouraged to contribute their personal narratives, ensuring that Dubai’s cultural legacy is passed down to future generations.

“Erth Dubai will ensure that our cultural legacy not only endures but also continues to inspire future generations, reinforcing our commitment to preserving the emirate’s cultural identity – a cornerstone that has strengthened Dubai’s renaissance and progress to this day,” Sheikh Hamdan stated.

The initiative will unfold in multiple phases throughout 2025, beginning with the collection of submissions from the community. A specialized jury with expertise in historical, social, and cultural fields will later evaluate the submissions to ensure authenticity and depth.

A Tribute to Dubai’s Legacy

Sheikh Hamdan emphasized that Erth Dubai is a tribute to the resilience, ambition, and unity that have defined Dubai’s journey. “Dubai’s journey is a story of ambition, resilience, and unity. It began with the vision of our ancestors, was carried forward by our fathers, and continues to evolve through the efforts of the current generation. Our shared heritage and values are the bedrock upon which we will continue to build, driving Dubai towards even greater heights,” he said.

Through the initiative, Emiratis will be encouraged to document personal stories that highlight daily life, family achievements, and key moments in Dubai’s history. These stories will help shape a digital archive with a personal touch, showcasing the emirate’s rich cultural depth and community spirit.

Educational and Governmental Collaboration

To encourage participation, Erth Dubai will collaborate with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) to launch a schools campaign. This initiative will motivate students to record the stories of their parents and grandparents, fostering a deeper connection to their roots and appreciation for the emirate’s history.

Government entities, businesses, and individuals are urged to actively participate, ensuring that the initiative successfully preserves Dubai’s historical journey for future generations.

Part of a Larger Preservation Effort

Erth Dubai is part of Sheikh Hamdan’s broader vision to document and archive Dubai’s legacy. It follows the Dubai National Archives Project, overseen by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, which aims to preserve the emirate’s government records, historical achievements, and cultural heritage to the highest global standards.

By creating a lasting record of Dubai’s transformation, Erth Dubai seeks to honor the past while shaping the future, ensuring that the voices and experiences of its people remain an integral part of the city’s ongoing journey.
