The University of Birmingham has climbed eight places to 68th in the latest QS World University Rankings, reaching its highest position in a decade.
The rise marks the fourth consecutive year of improvement for the university, which has moved up 23 places since 2023. Birmingham is now ranked joint 10th in the UK and has recorded the strongest and most consistent improvement among British universities in the global top 100 over the past five years.
University leaders said the progress reflects continued investment in research, education, technology and partnerships with industry.
The institution is also placing greater emphasis on preparing students for changing employment markets shaped by artificial intelligence, automation and rapid technological development.
Recent employment data shows Birmingham graduates continuing to secure high-quality jobs, with outcomes exceeding wider trends in the UK. The university has also been ranked among the top two UK institutions most targeted by leading employers in The Graduate Market in 2026 report.
The report covers 1,600 universities worldwide and highlights Birmingham’s reputation among employers seeking graduates for competitive roles.
The university said its global standing has been supported by research strengths, modern facilities, technology-focused teaching and partnerships with businesses and other organisations.
Its international presence includes the University of Birmingham Dubai, which offers students in the UAE access to the university’s global academic network and research-led teaching.
Professor Yusra Mouzughi, provost of the University of Birmingham Dubai, said the campus played an important role in the university’s international growth.
“Our Dubai campus plays a vital role in the University of Birmingham’s global success story,” she said.
“As we continue to rise in the world rankings, our ‘one university, two campuses’ motto means we are able to offer students in the UAE access to the same world-class education, research-led teaching, and outstanding graduate outcomes that define Birmingham globally.”
She said students were being prepared with both academic knowledge and broader skills needed to work in a rapidly changing, technology-driven economy.
The university said its focus on career readiness extends across its Edgbaston campus in the UK and its Dubai campus, with students being encouraged to develop technical expertise alongside communication, problem-solving and other professional skills.
The latest QS ranking places Birmingham among the world’s top 70 universities and adds to a period of sustained improvement in its international standing.
University officials said the results reflected the impact of long-term investment in people, ideas and research, while strengthening the institution’s position as a destination for students seeking international careers.
