OpenAI has introduced a new feature that allows users to connect external applications directly to ChatGPT, enabling the AI assistant to perform tasks across services linked to a user’s account.
The new app integrations are designed to make the chatbot more useful for daily activities by allowing it to interact with platforms people already use. With the feature enabled, users can link supported apps and ask ChatGPT to complete actions using information from those services.
For instance, someone who connects Spotify could ask the AI to create a personalised playlist based on their listening history. The playlist would then appear directly inside the user’s Spotify account.
The company said the goal is to move ChatGPT beyond simple text responses and allow it to take real actions across connected platforms, making the system function more like a digital assistant.
How the integrations work
Once an app is linked, ChatGPT can access certain data from that service depending on the permissions granted by the user. This information may include usage patterns, preferences, or account content that helps the AI provide tailored responses.
In the case of Spotify, the assistant may review listening history, playlists, and favourite artists to suggest new music or organise playlists suited to a user’s taste.
By combining AI responses with app-based actions, the integration aims to simplify tasks that would otherwise require users to switch between different apps or services.
Steps to connect apps
OpenAI said the setup process is designed to be simple. Users must first sign into their ChatGPT account and then choose one of two ways to connect services.
The first option is through prompts. A user can type the name of an app at the beginning of a request, and ChatGPT will guide them through the process of signing in and linking the service.
The second option is through the settings menu. Users can open ChatGPT, go to Settings, select the “Apps” section, browse available integrations, and sign in to connect their chosen platform.
Once the connection is completed, ChatGPT can interact with the service according to the permissions granted during setup.
Availability and privacy considerations
Users in the United Arab Emirates who have access to the latest version of ChatGPT may see the Apps section in their settings if the feature has been rolled out to their accounts. OpenAI noted that supported services may vary and additional integrations could appear over time.
The company also highlighted privacy considerations when linking external services. Connecting an app may allow ChatGPT to view certain information associated with that account in order to complete tasks or personalise results.
Users are advised to review requested permissions carefully before granting access. If they later decide to remove an integration, they can do so through the Apps section in ChatGPT settings, which immediately stops the AI from accessing data from that service.
