UAE Mediates Prisoner Swap Between Russia and Ukraine, Securing Release of 400 Captives

The United Arab Emirates announced on Thursday the success of mediation efforts conducted with the United States between Russia and Ukraine, resulting in the release of 400 captives, with 200 prisoners freed from each side. The latest exchange brings the total number of captives released through UAE-mediated initiatives to 5,355.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed its appreciation to both Russia and Ukraine for cooperating with the UAE–US mediation efforts, describing the collaboration as a recognition of initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis. Officials emphasized that the successful prisoner swap reflects the UAE’s continued commitment to humanitarian engagement and constructive diplomacy.

The ministry highlighted that the UAE has facilitated 19 mediation efforts since the conflict began, showcasing the depth of the country’s relations with both Russia and Ukraine. Authorities said these initiatives underscore the UAE’s ability to maintain balanced relations with all parties and to support diplomatic measures aimed at achieving a comprehensive political settlement.

“The UAE believes that cooperation and solidarity during times of hardship represent a humanitarian and moral responsibility that cannot be delayed,” the ministry stated. Officials added that such efforts help mitigate humanitarian impacts and strengthen prospects for peace, stability, and prosperity at both regional and global levels.

In addition to mediating prisoner exchanges, the UAE has hosted high-level diplomatic talks connected to the conflict. Abu Dhabi served as the venue for two rounds of trilateral meetings involving representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. The ministry said these discussions reflect the UAE’s approach of promoting dialogue and encouraging international cooperation, while also demonstrating the international community’s confidence in the country’s role as a neutral facilitator.

Officials said that hosting the talks provided a constructive environment for all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue. They described the UAE’s role as increasingly significant in international mediation efforts, particularly in cases with humanitarian implications.

Through sustained diplomatic outreach, prisoner exchanges, and dialogue facilitation, the UAE has positioned itself as a trusted mediator capable of maintaining communication channels between opposing sides. The latest prisoner swap highlights the impact of continued engagement and the importance of coordinated humanitarian diplomacy, even amid ongoing tensions and complex geopolitical challenges.

Authorities said the UAE remains committed to supporting efforts that promote peace, protect civilians, and create conditions for long-term stability. Officials emphasized that the country will continue to use its partnerships and balanced relations to advance initiatives that contribute to a lasting resolution of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.
